As director, coach, umpire, helped form city’s first Little League baseball program … field named after him at Winslow Sports Park … inducted in Monroe County Hall of Fame for leadership in promoting and participating in and development of sports activities for county’s youth … Herald-Times called him “a hero of a different sort, looked up to by a generation of young people in Monroe County” … had afternoon hours to spend because he worked in early morning as milkman, 48-year employee of Johnson Creamery … charter member of Bloomington Little League organization, director for 10 years … manager of Johnson Creamery Babe Ruth League team that won 1957 state championship … he and wife Frances raised 8 children, 3 of them sons who became high school baseball coaches: John (Bedford North Lawrence), Bill (Winchester) and Jim (Rushville). John’s BNL Stars won 1990 semi-state tournament on his late father’s birthday … died Feb. 3, 1979, at 64.
