After high school graduation in 1944, he served in two campaigns in Okinowa in World War II … went to Ohio State after the war and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Physical Education … received Master’s degree in P.E. from University of Washington in 1953 … diving coach at IU 1959-89 … coached 115 national champions, 22 Big Ten champions, 3 Olympic, 4 Pan American, 5 World champions … coached Olympic teams in 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 … selected 9 times as Diving Coach of the Year … founded World Diving Coaches Association in 1968 and American Diving Coaches Association in 1970 … 1982 NCAA Coach of the Year and Swimming Hall of Fame inductee … 1994 Sammy Lee Award winner, the world’s highest award in amateur diving … started Indiana Diving Camp, the first of its kind, subject of “Hobie’s Heroes” a documentary nominated for an Academy Award author of 4 books.
