After outstanding career at BHS and IU, became a charter-member Indiana Wrestling Coaches Hall of Famer coaching 4 state-champion teams at Southport … just second coach to win 4 titles (joining own BHS coach Harold Mumby) and still one of just 6 to do it … placed at state for Panthers all 4 high school years, second (1933) and third (1934) for state championship teams and 165-pound champion in 1935 … joined brother Charlie at IU, 2-time Big Ten champion, All-American for finishing third in 1940 NCAA for NCAA-runner up team … state championships at Southport were in 1951, ’54, ’55 and ’64; runner up 4 other years … named national high school Wrestling Coach of Year (1978), received Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce’s “Twin Tony” Award for career contributions … died at 84 in 1999.
