Priyanka Ghosh – Bloomington High School South – Swimming
Priyanka’s academic awards include Principal’s Scholar 4.0 Award, Academic Honors Diploma, President’s Award for Education Excellence, South Central Indiana Leaders of Tomorrow, National Honor Society, Leadership Opportunities Through Service, 2013 Conference Indiana Scholar Athlete, Science Olympiad, Top Performer in Indiana Mathematics League, T.S.A. Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics & Science, Excellence in English W131 College Composition, Herald-Times Scholastic Stars Award Winner, A.P. Scholar with Distinction, National A.P. Scholar, National Merit Finalist, National Merit Scholar, National Merit Scholarship; Indiana University Wells Scholarship Nominee, Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Award, Wendy Larissa Ware Inspirational Award. She is also valedictorian of her senior class. Athletically, she is the 2013 H-T Girls’ Swimmer of the Year, state swimming finals as an individual. She made it out to the 500 freestyle despite being quite ill and also anchored the 400 free relay to state. She leaves with school records in the 500 free (5:10.26), as well as marks in the 200 and 400 free relays. She was a four-time first-team all-area pick as the top 200 and 500 free swimmer. This year, she was 21st at state in the 500 free and went a team-best 54.09 to anchor the 400 free relay to 19th. She will attend University of Pennsylvania on a Coordinated Jerome Fisher Dual-Degree Program in Management and Technology.
Olivia Ashba – Edgewood High School – Soccer, Track
In addition to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Student Athlete from Edgewood High School, Oliva received Academic Honors Diploma, Ball State Athletic Scholarship, and the USMC Distinguished Athlete Award Ashba just concluded an outstanding career in track with a runner-up finish in the hurdles at the state finals. She led Mustangs in scoring for the second straight year with career-best 18 goals and seven assists. She has earned 13 conference titles, setting four conference records. She also won seven sectional titles, setting a sectional record in the 300 hurdles this year. In 2012 Olivia finished fourth at the state finals in the 100 hurdles. She also is a four-year letter-winner in soccer and participated in the Edgewood High School Show Choir for four years. She will be attending Ball State University on a full scholarship to run track.
Max Irwin – Bloomington High School North – Swimming
Awarded in addition to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Student/Athlete of 2013; were The Laura Childs Grant ($200), Greg Mongold Memorial Math Scholarship ($2,000), Tri-Kappa Scholarship ($1,000), United States Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, Indiana University Excellence Award $36,000, Rotary Club Scholarship $1,000, Indiana Elks Scholar $1,000, principal scholar, All Conference Scholar Athlete, AP Scholar with Distinction, Indiana Math League Top 5, Spell Bowl. Max was the H-T Swimmer of the Year. He won his second state title in the 500 freestyle and walked away with nine state medals in his career. He also has a hand in five school records. He will continue his academic and athletic career at IU.
Christine Zerfas – Bloomington High School North – Soccer
Awarded in addition to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Student Athlete of 2013, she received the Business and Professional Women’s Club Award ($140), Indiana University The Kelley Scholarship $85,000, principal scholar, All Conference Scholar Athlete, AP Scholar, Leaders of Tomorrow, LOTS Senior, Outstanding Physical Education Student – female (advanced). Zerfas was the H-T’s Soccer Player of the Year, setting a school record for goals with 35 and added 14 assists in leading the Cougars to semistate. She had seven goals and six assists in postseason. She also qualified for the state track meet in the 300 hurdles.
Reece Phillips – Edgewood High School – Baseball
In addition to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Student Athlete, he received Academic Honors Diploma, EHS Athletic Recognition Scholarship, Judd Cramer Memorial Scholarship, Lundy Scholarship, and the USMC Distinguished Athlete Award. Baseball has been Phillips’ best sport, although he also lettered in football and track. He made it to state in the 400-meter dash as a sophomore. H-T All Area Baseball 1st Team; Lefty ace will walk on at Indiana University after posting an eye-popping 98 strikeouts in 58 innings … went 7-2 with a 2.17 ERA … also hit .338 with three homers and a co-team-high 18 RBI’s.
Ronald R. Schneider III – Bloomington High School South – Tennis
Awarded in addition to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Student Athlete of 2013 from Bloomington South High School, included are Principal’s Scholar Award; Academic Honors Diploma; President’s Award for Education Excellence; Senior Exec Dance Marathon; Fred Huff Mental Attitude Award; South Central Indiana Leaders of Tomorrow; Athletic (Tennis) Scholarship $46,000 per year Schneider won three consecutive tennis state titles. In addition, Schneider was chosen for the Athletic Director’s Award as South’s overall top student athlete. Ronald will be playing tennis for the University of North Carolina.
